The Kindergarten Readiness System has now completed the Kindergarten data collection. At this time PreKindergarten data and Kindergarten data is being matched and undergoing the analysis. 2013 Prek Center of Excellence Designations will be awarded Spring 2013!

Pursuant to Texas Education Code (TEC) §28.006 (Reading Diagnosis) the superintendent, or a designee, of each school district and open-enrollment charter school is required to electronically report each kindergarten student’s raw score on kindergarten beginning of the year (BOY) reading instruments each year.

The kindergarten data collected under this provision are used to evaluate the effectiveness of prekindergarten programs and certain federal or government-subsidized child care and education programs under the Kindergarten Readiness System (KRS) formerly known as the School Readiness Certification System (SRCS). School districts and open-enrollment charter schools use the FERPA-compliant web-based reporting system.

Purpose and Goals

The purpose of the Kindergarten Readiness system is to evaluate the effectiveness of prekindergarten, Head Start, government subsidized, and other community-based child-care programs in preparing children for kindergarten.

KRS recognizes the positive impact of your PreK program with a “PreK Center of Excellence” designation.
The KRS program values local control and creative classroom efforts that prepare preschoolers for success in kindergarten.
Your PreK program can join KRS using a simple and web-based application process.
The PreK Center of Excellence designation is considered a gold standard in high quality PreK by the State of Texas.
The KRS provides parents with information that helps them make choices about a prekindergarten program and to enable them to select a program that prepares their children to be on grade level upon kindergarten entry.
This program is voluntary and offered at no charge. This program is offered through a partnership with the Texas Education Agency and Region 17 Education Service Center.
